Questions and Answers |

Disposable medical devices E-beam sterilization can be processed in different ways. It has been processed in carton boxes for many years. In this case it is often irradiated at an energy level of 10 MeV, although irradiation facilities work at lower energies.
Medical devices can also be treated piece by piece. This second case has the advantage to require lower energy level (cheaper accelerators and cheaper shielding). By the same token it requires one electron accelerator per product type.

The Ratio (g/cm2) is Weight / (Width x Length) for each type of box
If the Ratio is > 3,6, the box requires double side irradiation.
The total surface to irradiate - practically - if the scan width is fixed is

(width of scan  x  # boxes  x  Length)

multiplied by 2 if this box requires double side irradiation
The total surface to irradiate - practically - if the scan width is variable

if we consider 5cm over-scanning on each side

 ((5 + width of box + 5)  x  # boxes  x  Length)

multiplied by 2 if this box requires double side irradiation
